UCSF Requirements

This page outlines the essential steps and guidelines for UCSF students preparing for an academic experience abroad—from completing necessary travel approval forms to registering your trip with key systems and navigating visa requirements. By following these protocols, you can focus on making the most of your transformative experience while staying informed and prepared. Please be sure to review each section below and complete all required steps before departure.

UCSF Student Travel Guidance

All UCSF students who are traveling outside of the US are required to receive travel approval before their departure. The Student Travel Guidance page provides an overview of the travel approval process, links to required forms, and also includes current travel advisories.

UCSF Emergency Packet

All students should complete the UCSF International Emergency Packet prior to departure. This packet is an important resource that will help you keep track of important and emergency contacts and includes additional emergency information and resources. All travelers are encouraged to complete the UCSF Emergency Card, which is included in this packet, and keep it accessible for easy reference during your travels. Contact your School or Department Advisor to confirm whether they need to receive a copy of the completed packet.

Register Your Travel

Before traveling, register your trip through UC Away and the US Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). These programs provide you with safety and security updates and may be able to provide additional support to travelers in emergency situations.

School or Department Requirements and Forms

The information included on these Study and Training Abroad webpages is meant to be generally applicable for all UCSF students traveling for UC-related purposes. Many Schools and Departments will have additional forms or processes required to receive academic credit, financial resources, and other support and benefits. Be sure to contact your Program and/or Global Advisors in advance of your travels to discuss additional requirements.
