Fulbright U.S. Student Program

UCSF Internal Application Deadline: Sept 1, 2025 by 11:59 p.m. PST

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs to study, research or teach English abroad. To be eligible as a UCSF graduate student, you must not have been awarded a doctorate degree at the time the Fulbright application is submitted. To be eligible as a UCSF medical student, you can only apply the Fall of your third year of school.

Steps

  1. Review each of the UCSF and Fulbright resources below
  2. Identify the country and type of award you would like to apply for. If you have application questions after selecting the country and award, reach out to [email protected], CAIPS International Programs Director + Fulbright Program Adviser
  3. Apply for Award through Fulbright's application portal by Sept 1, 2025 by 11:59 p.m. PST.
  4. In mid-to-late September, you will be invited by UCSF's Fulbright Program Adviser to informally meet with a UCSF Fulbright Faculty Review Committee. The Committee will review your application and provide feedback to you. UCSF's Fulbright Program Adviser (FPA) will release your initial application back to you to make updates. At that time, the FPA will also request that you: (A) complete a brief questionnaire about your knowledge of the country you intend to study or research in, and (B) briefly describe how you've demonstrated resilience or perseverance with personal challenges and adversity. UCSF will advance your application to the Fulbright national committee with responses to (A) and (B). Note that all applicants will be advanced to the national committee.
  5. Candidates will have until Oct 7, 2025 by 5 p.m. EST to resubmit their application a second time through Fulbright's application portal. Please note that the application portal will be extremely taxed on Oct 7 and, at times, has frozen due to the number of applications received that day. UCSF strongly encourages applicants to submit their applications before Oct 7, if at all possible. Unfortunately, applications received after Oct 7, 5PM EST deadline will not be reviewed by the Fulbright Commission, even if the application freezes on Fulbright's side.
  6. Candidates will learn if they were selected for an Award by Fulbright by mid-April the following year
