ISSO English Conversation Classes

To help international students and scholars at UCSF achieve their English language goals, the ISSO offers a 50-minute English conversation each week (subject to instructor availability). Classes are open to any and all international students or scholars at UCSF, regardless of their affiliation, as well as their spouse.

Each class is designed to be independent of each other so anyone can attend without having to worry about what was covered in the prior class or missing the next class. The primary goal of each class is to provide attendees with a judgment-free space to speak English freely and ask any questions about the language that arise in the course of the class.

Registering for Class

No registration is necessary. Classes are designed with a "drop-in" format to accommodate the dynamic schedules many UCSF scholars have, so there is no obligation to join the class if something unexpected happens.

Class Organization

The primary focus of each class is English speaking and conversation.

Each week, the class facilitator will lead a conversation around a general topic. Participants can expect to start their discussions in smaller groups for a portion of the class followed by a larger group discussion. The class facilitator will be there to assist with pronunciation and to elicit new vocabulary.

Because the class has a "drop-in" format, no homework or pre-readings will be required. All you are expected to do is show up and enjoy a conversation with other members of the UCSF community.

Class Location and Dates

Unless noted otherwise, classes will meet in the Rutter Center lounge (ground floor, across the lobby from the gym). This location may change depending on the availability of the space. Any changes will be noted on this page and via the class Whatsapp group chat.
