ISSO urges international travelers to consider arranging their travel back to the U.S. before January 20, 2025. While ISSO is uncertain if new travel bans will be implemented, the incoming administration has shared that they are considering them, which could go into effect as early as Jan 20, 2025 and prevent US re-entry for certain travelers. Domestic travel within the US should not be impacted by the new Presidential administration.
Please assess your re-entry risk if traveling internationally and plan accordingly:
- Low-Risk Travel: If you don’t need a visa renewal and will return before Jan 20, 2025 your international travel risk is low.
- Medium-Risk Travel: If you need to renew your visa abroad and expect to return before Jan 20, 2025, anticipate delays due to the surge in global travel during the holidays and the potential for administrative processing.
- High-Risk Travel: If you need to renew your visa and have been subject to administrative processing in the past, or if you will return on or after Jan 20, 2025, you may face re-entry issues and/or delays.
**Before traveling, secure your visa interview appointment if appropriate, and consult with your supervisor and your campus HR representative about whether you may work and/or be paid while abroad if your re-entry is delayed. Talk with your instructors about study plans if your entry is delayed. The responses from these stakeholders will determine whether international travel is feasible for your situation.
If you have remaining questions after talking with your supervisor, HR and/or your department, please reach out to your ISSO adviser for guidance.
