Extension of J-1 Status

Eligibility

  • Timeline: Submit at least 8 weeks before the new start date.
  • PI Approval: Supervisor must support the extension.
  • Status: Must have maintained valid J-1 status.
  • Funding: Must meet minimum funding requirements.
  • Insurance: Must maintain Department of State-compliant health insurance.
  • No Gaps: No break allowed between current and new appointment dates.
  • Maximum J-1 Duration Limits: J-1 short term scholars cannot be extended beyond 6 months; J-1 research scholars and professors cannot be extended beyond 5 years; J-1 non-degree seeking students cannot be extended beyond 2 years. 
  • 212(e) Waiver Recommendation: If you’ve received a favorable 212(e) waiver recommendation, you are not eligible for a J-1 extension.

Process

  1. Your UCSF supervisor confirms with your HR department liaison or administrator that they approve your extension
  2. Your HR department liaison or administrator will submit a PeopleConnect Management (PCMA) ticket to campus HR
  3. Main campus HR will review the reappointment ticket for eligibility and approve the extension if appropriate
  4. Campus HR will submit the J-1 extension request to ISSO. Contact your campus HR contact regarding the status of your request.
  5. ISSO will review for eligibility and send your extended DS-2019 to you via UCSF's DocuSign
