ISSO is aware of the forthcoming D/S rule that is intended to replace “duration of status” admissions with fixed end dates on Form I-94s, require students and exchange visitors to file formal extension applications with USCIS, shorten student grace periods, and impose new limits on student program changes.
Once the final rule is published, ISSO will carefully review its impact and coordinate with our sister UC campuses to ensure consistent guidance.
Please note:
- The new rule is not yet in effect.
- No action is necessary for now. ISSO will provide further instructions after the rule is published.
- The rule is expected to become effective 60 days after publication. ISSO will post the publication date and effective date once they are available.
Please wait for additional guidance from ISSO rather than contacting our office when the rule is published. This will allow ISSO to focus on reviewing the new requirements and developing guidance for the UCSF community.
We will send targeted communications directly to respective UCSF-sponsored international students and scholars when guidance is ready, and post updates to this webpage as information becomes available.
In the meantime, please continue to follow the end dates listed on your I-20, DS-2019, or OPT EAD and kindly be patient for further instructions from ISSO.
